Asad Ashraf

I am a journalist with over a decade of experience reporting on politics, development, and the social realities shaping contemporary India. My work has largely focused on field reporting, particularly in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, where the intersection of power, policy, and lived experience is most visible.

Over the years, I have worked across newsrooms and formats as a reporter, editor, and video producer, contributing to organisations such as Frontline, TRT, Al Jazeera, Firstpost, Newslaundry, The Wire, The Quint, and others. I have reported on elections, covered complex socio-political issues, and produced long-form as well as digital-first stories, with a consistent emphasis on accuracy, depth, and clarity.

I am particularly interested in stories at the margins, where development meets politics and communities are often spoken about but rarely heard. My work attempts to bridge that gap through on-the-ground reporting and nuanced storytelling.

Alongside reporting, I have also mentored young journalists, shaped editorial strategies, and worked on video storytelling at the intersection of journalism and documentary filmmaking.

Currently, I am working with Newsreel Asia, where I continue to report, write, and experiment with new formats of digital journalism. Alongside my professional work, I am pursuing a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) at Lloyd Law College, reflecting my growing interest in the intersection of law, governance, public policy, and journalism. My legal education complements my reporting by deepening my understanding of constitutional issues, judicial processes, and the legal frameworks that shape public life in India.

As I continue my journey, I remain committed to building meaningful, independent, and public-interest journalism that combines rigorous reporting with thoughtful analysis and innovative storytelling.
